What a great time we had this evening dressed in our finest, having High Tea, which included cheese,bread,and sweet and dill pickles, for the second course we had cottage pie, peas and a scone, and for dessert a fruit tart, all in an historic house, dating back to the Late 1800's.
We learned so many things:
High Tea: sitting at a table that is
high (like a dining room table), not low like a coffee table, and having 2 or 3 course meals during that time
How to sit at the table properly, where silverware and glassware are placed, and
always wait to eat until everyone has been served
Anything that they could grow and can like,pickles,tomato's,corn,peaches and jams along with potato's and onions they would keep cold in a cellar (cave) for eating during the winter
Sugar did not come in small packages, but in cubes, this is where one lump or two came from
There was no electricity in Fort Calhoun, but Omaha did have it.
There were no bathrooms in the house, they had to use a
chamber pot or go outside to the outhouse.

The crib for a young child stayed in the mothers room
The wife usually sewed the family's clothes
Chamber Pot, a bowl that you would use to relieve yourself in
The family would entertain themselves in the sitting room, and take guests in the parlor
They would play chess or checkers or sing along with the piano for indoor entertainment
The family that lived there went to the park, road horses went to the store, ate fried chicken, and did a lot of things that we do now.
